Alternative Loans

Alternative and private loans are applied for by students and/or parents and are designed to supplement federal student aid. You should always exhaust your federal aid possibilities, including the Federal Direct Loans, before applying for alternative loans. It is very likely that the lenders will even have you affirm that you have done this before you can continue their application process.

To apply for federal loans, you must first complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Bay College also works with ScholarNet to help you borrow an alternative student loan.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available at fafsa.gov

The federal government defines a student as being dependent until the age of 24. To determine whether a student is independent or dependent for financial aid purposes, FAFSA provides eight questions in the student dependency status section. Unless you can answer "yes" to one or more of those questions, you will be considered dependent and parent information is required, even if they do not plan to help you with your school expenses. If you have unusual circumstances that you believe warrant a dependency override, you should speak with the Director of Financial Aid.

  1. Personal information: Social security numbers, date of birth, etc. (and for your parents if you are a dependent student)
  2. Prior, prior year tax information (for example: Completing the 2023-2024 FAFSA requires 2021 tax information. (and for your parents if you are a dependent student).
  3. Information on savings, investments, and business and farm assets for yourself (and for your parents if you are a dependent student)

Use Bay College school code 002240 when applying for financial aid.

The FAFSA displays a confirmation page upon completion of the FAFSA indicating estimated federal grant and loan eligibility based on the information you provided on the application. This information is also sent to the school and will be sent to you in an award letter with more detail.

Depending on your eligibility determined by FAFSA, a student can be eligible to receive aid with being less than full-time (12 Credits).
