Each December, the Arts and Letters Division at Bay College holds a student writing contest. Any current Bay College student may submit up to three entries in each of three categories: fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. All entries are to be sponsored by Bay College faculty. Faculty judges award cash awards to the top two entries in each category.

Those winning entries in each category then advance to the state level contest, the Liberal Arts Network for Development (LAND) Creative Writing Competition, where cash prizes are awarded for each category. LAND membership consists of Michigan community colleges, and its purpose is to promote a network for strengthening the liberal arts in Michigan community college. The organization hosts a conference each February, during which contest winners are recognized.
